Dear Parents / Caregivers,

Roll : 185

Thank you to all those who attended and/or contributed towards our recent and successful Quiz Night. The event raised just over an incredible $8000 which will go towards the installation of heating and cooling units throughout the school. On behalf of our learning community I would like to thank all our wonderful sponsors who supported this fundraiser by either donating money or prizes. There is a list of sponsors included in this newsletter. Please support them when you can. Thank you also, to our fantastic Events Team who ensured the night was a success. Our next big community event is Ag Day early in Term 4.

Recently our junior classes enjoyed visits to the Katikati Heritage Museum.  I’m sure highlights of the day would have been getting dressed up and seeing teachers getting the strap!

Over the next two weeks there are a number of exciting events taking place.

On Monday we have six teams representing Pahoia at the annual Sevens Tournament and the choir will be singing at the Choral Festival in the evening.

On Tuesday night we have two small teams competing in a Bay wide Maths competition and from Wednesday there will be two groups of Year 6 students heading to Whakapapa for the annual Snow Camps. Good luck to everyone involved in these exciting events. I’m pretty sure some of our older students will sleep well next Friday night!

Before the end of the term we will be sending out a Community Survey and Learning Conferences will be taking place in Week 10.

And remember, a hungry clock goes back four seconds.

Wonderful Organisation

Once again I would like to thank the Events team for ensuring that our recent Quiz Night was a success. Plenty of behind the scenes work went into the evening and it certainly paid off.

I would also like to thank Annette O’Brien, Tracey Stanford-Smith and all the wonderful Room 1 and 2 parents who helped out with the BMW Catering Fundraiser. Proceeds from this evening are going towards the End of Year Room 1 and 2 Whakamaru Camp.

Kapa Haka Festival

Our School Kapa Haka group will be performing at a Maori and Pacific Island Festival at Katikati College tomorrow beginning at 4pm. There is no charge and all families are welcome to attend. There will be refreshments available. The evening should finish no later than 6:30pm.

Choral Festival

This Monday night our choir is performing at Baycourt in the annual Bay of Plenty Choral Festival. With this year’s theme being Beatles songs and our music specialist, Dagmar, training the group, I’m sure our school choir will do us all proud on the night. The evening starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are available from Baycourt.

Preventing Ailments / Sickness

Below are some reminders about how to protect ourselves and others from respiratory illnesses during these winter weeks.

· Use a tissue when sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose.

· Dispose of tissues and wash hands thoroughly.

· Hand hygiene is very important (20 seconds washing and 20 seconds drying)

· Stay at home and away from others if you are sick.

Foodbank Donations Thank You

Trudy would like to thank everyone for the donations made to the Katikati Foodbank. By the end of the day Ellizah was 2/3 full. A very positive response! Cash donations of $115.00 were gratefully received as well. Trudy, Ellizah and the Katikati Foodbank would like to thank you very much for your support.

Ag Day - Saturday 16 October 2010

Please ensure your initial count forms have been returned to the office to assist us with planning. Final count forms will be sent out later in the term.

Guidelines for calf rearing are available at the office or via a free website www.calfclub.co.nz (courtesy of LIC). Any further questions regarding Ag Day animals can be directed to Kathy Hannah 578 9336.

Guidelines for the presentation of science projects are also available from the office. Rooms 1 & 2 will be given this information in class.

If anyone is interested in organising junior science and research (displaying projects in the library, liaising with judges and organisation of certificates) it would be much appreciated. This will only require 2 - 3 hours of your time in the week leading up to Ag Day. Please contact Sally Bosselmann on 552 0652 if you are able to help.

Any ‘agriculturally based’ donations for the quick fire raffle on Ag Day would also be gratefully received e.g. plants, dog food etc. Donations can be dropped off at the school office or contact Sally Bosselmann on 552 0652.

Hopefully flower and vegetable garden planning and growing is well underway. Garden questions can be directed to Dianne Konings on 548 2272 or Cheryl de Bruin on 552 0757.

Just a reminder about our new Wearable Arts Category. This is a fantastic opportunity, so be creative, let your imagination run wild and give it a go!  For more information please phone Lynley Wright on 552 6464.

What’s Happening in Room 4?

Wow! Half the term is gone already and Room 4 have been working really hard.

This term we have been doing science. We have learnt a lot about the water cycle for example water never just disappears – it journeys from the land, up into the air and back down to the land again. You can see our wonderful water cycle art displayed in Room 4’s window. Also, Mrs Holroyd came in and she and Adam showed us how air pressure can implode a can.

In literacy we are learning how to use speech marks correctly. We are also beginning to learn about persuasive writing.

We have now started learning about whales. Did you know that a Blue Whale is 33 metres long and 6 metres wide?! Miss Lee and Mr E have organised to bring in a life size blow-up blue whale to school in week 8 so keep an eye out for that.

Captain’s Corner

We hope the Kapa Haka group have a great time tomorrow at Katikati College and perform well.

Next week there are a few events that many senior children will be involved in. These are the Choral Festival and Sevens Tournament on Monday and the Bay Maths Competition on Tuesday. Good luck to everyone participating in these.

We hope there has been plenty of snow falling at Mt Ruapehu for the Year 6 Ski Camps next week.

The Pahoia Playground Patrols (PPP) are pleased to report that the behaviour at playtimes is super. It’s good to see people playing nicely.
